Classic FM Classic 100

Ok, so I voted for the following (in no particular order):

Beethoven - Egmont Overture
Smetana - Ma Vlast
Elgar - Cello Concerto
Bizet - The Pearl Fishers (for Au fond du temple saint of course!)
Rossini - Stabat Mater
Verdi - Requiem
Mozart - Requiem
Copland - Rodeo
Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5
Bernstein - Candide

What do you think?

Very Classic FM I think, and therefore ultimetly very modern and predictable.

Where is the Tallis, where is the Byrd, Purcell, Palistrina or Gesualdo (look him up, notable for killing his wife and writing music so odd that nobody tried anything so stupid again for at least 250 years). It is a well known fact (recently inveted by me) that nothing of merit was written after 1700.

Welcome back

Fair enough. I will say however, that that is my list, not Classic FMs. I had to whittle it down a bit but they are, at this moment in time, my most favourite pieces.

By the way, I'm not sure that's entirely a fair comment re Classic FM as here in Aus they play a really wide selection of everything from Tallis and Byrd right the way through to Glass, jazz and Flanders and Swann. Really enjoying it in the mornings :)

Webern's "Langsamer Satz". Find it. Listen. Yes, it is for strings only but it is exquisite. Beautiful. Heart-wrenching. Would possibly accompany a "moment" very well, so do be careful, but blubbing like a whale (as do I Sweetie, worry not about prettiness) to this is better than blubbing with no musical accompaniment. Huge big hugs. (Sorry to be late with that but something occurred with my blogroll I think...) xxxxxxx
PS I could try the skype thing; it sounds very good and then I could introduce Mini to Auntie Bells when it arrives :) xx
